Enjoy a screen-free summer

07 Jul 2025

Your holiday is the perfect moment to step away from your TV or laptop, put your phone down and really switch off. Luckily, there are plenty of fun things to do that don’t involve a screen. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

1. Take it slow

Our busy lives don’t leave much room for simply doing nothing, even though that’s exactly what helps us recharge. It might feel like a waste of time, but letting your mind wander is one of the best ways to relax. So:

  • Pour yourself a drink, sit back in your (garden) chair and just be still for a while.
  • Treat yourself to a spa day with your partner or a friend — saunas, pools, massages… and no screens allowed.
  • Turn on the radio and sing along to your favourite songs.
  • Pick up a good book. Not sure what to read? We’ve got a few inspiring titles for you.

2. Prefer to stay active?

Maybe relaxing for you means moving. If your sports club takes a summer break, there are plenty of other ways to stay on the move.

  • Head to a nearby golf course and play a few holes — it takes patience, focus and a calm mind.
  • Play tennis or padel with friends.
  • Hop on your bike or mountain bike and explore the beautiful Dutch countryside.
  • Or go for a walk! Check wandel.nl or anwb.nl for the best trails near you.

3. Get creative

Creativity is a great way to unwind — and the best part is, anyone can do it. You don’t have to be “good” at it. All it takes is a bit of time and a few materials. And now that you’re spending less time on your phone, you’ve got both.

  • Try drawing or painting.
  • Play your instrument again, or learn a new one.
  • Join a pottery class.
  • Grab some tools and materials and start building: a birdhouse, insect hotel or maybe even a picnic table.
  • Gardening counts too! Plant something new and see instant results. It’s great for clearing your head.

4. Family time

Because doing things together is always more fun than doing them alone!

  • Spend a day by the water; a lake, the beach or a river. Check zwemwater.nl to find swimming spots near you.
  • Visit a museum, like the Dutch Open Air Museum in Arnhem, the preHistorisch Dorp in Eindhoven or MuZIEum in Nijmegen. You’ll find more at museumgidsnederland.nl.
  • Plan a summer barbecue or a picnic in the park with family and friends. Check leukerecepten.nl for healthy and tasty recipes.
  • And when it gets really hot — a water balloon fight never fails.
